Cannon Digi 10 ROCK but.......

Postby Duck » Wed Jul 02, 2014 7:56 am

Yesterday I had a chance to use our new Cannon Digi 10 downrigger that we bought at the Seattle Boat Show. Good job Nelly on closing the deal on something we wanted to buy. We just needed a little encouragement.
Took us a while to figure out the setting but once we did, SO COOL. The bottom tracking works great after you figure out the correct setting. We have 2 Digi 10 and one Scotty 1106. I already had 2 Scottys so we build a Cannon/Scotty conversion plate to try 3 DR at the same time. 2 DR had 15 lb balls the center Cannon DR had 10 lb. The Scotty is easy to use and preformed as expected. The Digi 10 had a 2-3 hour learning curve. Once past the learning curve, "We need a 3rd Digi 10". We were laughing at how easy tracking 5 feet off the bottom was.

Now the Con side...
We kept getting birds nest in the cable on the Digi 10 after bringing the DR up to check the gear. Then lowering the ball back down would clear most of the birds nest but not all. Lowering the gear down sounded horrible as the cable tried to untangle itself. One of the nest put a cink in the cable. Strictly a guess, looks like the cable is stacking on itself to one side, then sliding off, creating a bunch of slack down in the spool. Once there was slack, the cable turned into a mess. This mess also threw off the cable depth when lowering the ball back down each time. The size of the nest would determine how far from accurate the DR ball depth was. At one point we had to find deep water to clear the birds nest and start over. End of day we had to clear the nest again. I wondered if I had set up the Digi 10 correctly but remember it was assemble in the box. All I did was connect the terminating end.

Any recommendations? Thanks

Hey Rock,
There is a simple fix to the wire stacking on one side of the spool and that is to use the ball hook on the boom as your level wind or fairlead.

Run your cable through the ball hook (which may need to be turned so the open side points forward so the wire will not come out of the ball hook) and that wire will flow evenly and your bottom tracking will be quiet, trouble- free and successful. rockon

Thank you. Now I just need another sale like the boat show. We want a third Digi 10.

Just to show you exactly what I mean, here is a shot of the boom-mounted ball hook in "action" :o

Position the ball hook with the opening forward so the wire will spool evenly.

Remember that the ball hook position port and starboard will be reversed so you'll have to pay attention when removing and re-installing your riggers! rockon

Nelly, a second thank you! I was having the same issue and had the wrenches hanging over the side of the boat on Sunday in 500 feet of water.

Before making final adjustments I noticed some slight grooving in my ball hook from the cable. Do you need to replace the hook every so often?

Good point Troy,
After 17 days in Sitka and a couple more in the SJ's there is a groove visible.
If I go through a ball hook a year I would be amazed. I have talked to the factory and they are working on a true fairlead that will be the end of this issue.

The cost of a hook is a very small price to pay. Thank you again. Really appreciate the show and the responses to the forum questions.
