Sand Dab Swim Baits

Barry Dubnow didn't wait for the new KGM swim bads to hit tackle stores. He called up Ken and grabbed a bunch of them ahead of time. Barry just sent me these pics of his dabs all rigged up and ready to go for the ling opener on May 1st. Lookin' good Barry!

Here's the rigging video I put together last weekend and some underwater video of them in action. Methinks the new swim dabs will put the beat down on some lings this season boxing

Hey Rob, I have a question about these.
The rule of thumb I've always heard is that if you are using live bait for lings, you let them eat it. In fact you give them time to turn it around in their mouth and try to run off with it.
However, when using artificials, I've always heard that you set the hook on the pick-up.

Did I hear right on the show last week that you recommend letting them eat these swimbaits a bit before trying to get a hook set?

If you get a bite on one of these I recommend holding the rod tip still long enough for them to get ahold of it and then simply reel into them with a heavy drag. Usually with a ling you'll feel a "thump, thump, thump" as they get ahold of it and then a steady pull when they turn and swim off or head back to the bottom. An immediate hook set will increase the likelihood of missing the ling and you might tear the living ##it out of the swim bait.

4 to 6 ounce jig head works best and you can find them at any of the major shops. OE, Sportco, Johns, Teds, 3 Rivers, Auburn Sports, Holiday, Defiance...they should all have jigheads.
