Water Viz in the Salt

Question for the board here. Launched in kingston this morning and ran up to No Point. With all the rain we have had the rivers blew up the sound. On the drop I would loose sight of my DR clip after about 8 inches down. If I was fishing a river in that type of viz I woulda packed up and went home. So my question is this... Anybody ever done any good in conditions like those? I highly doubt that the color was like that from top to bottom. After about a hour or so I ran north and found better water up around mutiny and got into a few fish. Just curious if anybody has done good when its like that. Wood chunks, dead heads, and large floating trees are all over out there. Totally had to be paying attention while under way.

It is pretty common for the dirty freshwater to essential "float" on the denser salt water. Below that freshwater lens the water will be clear - though the light penetration will be limited. Watch your depth finder carefully. It is not uncommon to see Chinook suspend in those conditions (at times only 35 to 50 feet below the surface).

Those fish are catchable!

Smalma's nailed it...again. It's almost like he's been doing this for a long, long time

The freshwater is like a lid on top of the clear saltwater below it. Used to catch a few in the San Juans in the dirty water when the Nooksack would blow chunks. One year it was brown all the way out past Point Lawrence, but the fish were still biting just fine at the point. I wouldn't say it works all the time, but often enough to where you might want to at least make a tow to give a favorite spot a check before moving on.
