UV, glow or both for salmon fishing in Puget Sound?

I am a little overwhelmed with all the variety of spoons, hootchies, and flashers that or UV, glow, both UV/glow, or neither.

I primarily fish for salmon in the puget sound. I usually fish deep for black mouth and even silvers I sometimes fish over 100 feet. Can someone give me an idea of when and where UV or glow will benefit while trolling with a flasher and spoon or hootchie. I like using the king fisher spoons. I am particularly fond of the UV glow Irish flag, Irish cream, cookies and cream. I am beginning to believe in the uv glow combo that I want all my lures to have UV and glow. I understand that salmon may see UV at deeper depths. When I am buying lures what finishes do you recommend me getting for which conditions. This is a broad question but I'd like to narrow down what lures to buy that work in the midst of soooo many options. I appreciate everyone's input on this.

I think you nailed it with the spoons you mentioned. Don't forget the Red Racer and Yellow Tail. If you have those spoons in the 3, 3.5, and 4 inch you pretty much have it covered. the UV/GLOW combo lures are awesome. Its very important to match the SIZE of the lure to the size of the bait the fish are feeding on. Don't forget to add a mini hoochie to the hook once in a while. I have in my arsenal every spoon and Coho Killer you can think of, and most of them are still brand new because I use the 3 you mentioned and the 2 I added the most, and always in some kind of UV variation. Finding the bait and matching it is the most important thing. When it comes to Squid and Ace Hi-Flys, the UV purple Haze and Apple Core are pretty hard to beat. This time of year when the Blackmouth are feeding on squid and the tide changes are right before the sun comes up the GLO Apple Core is absolutely deadly. Hope this helps

Thanks for your quick response Derek. That helps a lot. Matching the hatch it agree that is more important. I do like the red racer and yellow tail spoons as well. I did add uv to them to experiment. I wondered if the uv and glow greatly improved the visibility of the spoon. Like if it out produces non uv or glow.
Thanks for the tip with the apple core hootchie. I will remember your tip and try it at a tide change just before dark.

I think it does. My son and I did a little study in the summer this year. We were fishing the same gear, same depth, same set-back on both sides of the boat the difference was He had a UV 4" Red Racer and I had a Glow 4" Red Racer. Fishing 130' of water dragging bottom. The UV lure got ALL the action including shakers and sole. we did the same thing mooching one time. I cured my herring and added some Mrs Stewarts Blueing to it for UV. I outfished him big time. I believe in UV in a major way.

With my limited time out on the water it helps that you shared your experiment. It confirms my believe that uv works. So much so that I am applying uv blast to my spoons.

When the suns out I go UV spoons and flashers. When it's overcast I go glow.

I also agree with King Me.

I run both glow and UV. I really haven't seen a downside to either. They're literally the same price as the nun coated spoons and hootchies, so for the money you're hard pressed to go away from them. The one thing I have been told is, if it is a really bright day and you have a silver/metallic spoon with UV coating, switch to a glow or duller spoon. The reason being, the lure will be really bright in the water reflecting light like crazy which may turn fish off. I haven't PERSONALLY tested this to see if there is any merit to the statement, but I heard it from a guy who looked like a pretty seasoned fisherman.

I've always found that the deeper you fish the more you have to do to attract the game fish you are after. Sight, smell and what ever else you can think of. Especially when you are dragging the mud for kings.
