My Montana Mule Deer

Postby Robbo » Wed Nov 13, 2013 1:55 pm

I just returned from an awesome weeklong do-it-yourself mule deer hunt with some good friends in Montana. I've got torn meniscus in both knees, so marching up and down the hills looking for a monster wasn't in the cards for me on this hunt.

Nonetheless I was still able to get within range of quite a few shooters and I ended up taking this nice 4x4 on the second day of the hunt. I was using a Savage .300 win mag with a Leupold VX-3L scope and Federal Fusion with a 165 grain Barnes X bullet. The buck dropped in it's tracks!

After taking this heavy-bodied muley I got to spend the rest of the week helping friends spot and stalk their own deer. What a blast!

Rob,
It looks like fun for sure! You have to love the wide open spaces and the time to sit and glass bucks chasing does in the "quiet country"
Good job!

I'm taking my Son to Montana this year hoping to get him his first deer. He is 13 and has one more year until he is in high school and wrestling will make it tough to get him out of state. I'm torn between the Missouri breaks or Custer nat. forest.
