Coho Chaos in Craig, Alaska

We’ve had some unbelievable fishing for silver salmon here in Craig, Alaska this past week with limits coming early on most mornings. Some mornings we’ve actually been avoiding some of the larger concentrations of silvers in hopes of finding some quality king salmon.

Just a couple mornings ago that strategy paid off as Dale Maris from Buckley, Washington hooked into a nice fish and said, “This one feels like the right kind!” Twenty minutes later Dale slid this nice 33 pound king salmon into the net.

When the weather affords it the offshore fishing for halibut, ling cod, and yelloweye has been great. Here’s Dave Maris with a really nice ling cod that he picked up fishing on the sand for halibut. Wherever there’s food the ling cod will follow and we often find them out on the sand cavorting with the halibut feeding on candlefish.

On just about every trip we’ve made offshore we’ve ran into at least one oversize halibut…sometimes more. Joe Maris cranked up this 62 inch, 120 pound halibut a few days back on a rocky pinnacle looking for ling cod. Even though it’s a lot of work it’s kind of nice to see these big girls head back to the bottom to do their thing. I’m not sure if Joe’s back would agree with that though!

Here’s Megan Scherting from Bozeman, Montana with a nice king salmon that she caught off Noyes Island. She fished with her dad Tom who’s been fishing with us for quite a few years now.

I swear this picture hasn’t been Photoshopped! These are a couple of the gi-normous dusky rockfish that Craig Connors caught while fishing for yelloweye’s. I’ve seen a few big ones, but nothing like these monsters.

Because of a last minute cancellation our new host Kara Barlow was able to jump aboard the Polar Bear for a day of fishing yesterday. This is one of the many nice silvers that she caught on a perfect day in Southeast Alaska!

I just completed a long stretch of fishing every day and will be back on the normal schedule again, which means I’ll be able to post photos a little more regularly. The fishing has been unreal and life is good here in Southeast Alaska.

Thanks for stopping by and good fishing to you!
