Team Cut Plug hit Area 6, 15 miles west of Port Angeles on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday the Straits were packed with 5 to 6 footers which made for a slow trip up from Everett in the Ocean Sport. We fished mid day on Thursday and Friday morning till 11 am. Both days we hit a lot of kings, a few coho and 2 pinks (released those in a heartbeat). Working the Cannon bottom track hard, we landed some really nice kings. Two fish were over 20 lbs (one was native and had a perfect, clean release). We landed 12 kings (not including shakers) and got to bring home 9 keepers. We stuck with the Q Cove flasher and Silver Horde Yellow Tail for the bottom and of course, Cut Plug Herring on a knuckle buster on top. We had some pretty awesome takes on the herring also.
Approximately 40 take downs on the down riggers in about 12 hours of fishing, not including the old school herring up top (That was good for another 20 hits).
One of our newbies on board lost a monster to a kelp bed, pretty sad seeing the line wrapped around a huge kelp bed while a 30 pound king is jumping 30 yards away still attached to the line, flasher and spoon. We tried for 20 minutes to free up the line on the kelp bed but he finally got away!
The Area 9 opener should be dynamite!
