Teaser spoon Bubble test... FAIL... HELP

Okay Nelly need more help with this one. Fished the Bubble Saturday, had flasher/spoon down to 110ft, put on teaser spoon (yellow tail coho killer). Toward the north end of the run I had a humongous hit that ripped me off the downrigger and ran like hell. I knew it was a good fish and I fought it for 5 or 6 minutes. I knew it was on the teaser 'cause I could feel it slipping down my mainline as the fish was running. I finally got it stopped and under control when it suddenly just came unpinned. When I brought the rig in there was no tangle with the flasher but a lot of grass on the flasher, so not sure if that's how he got off or not. The reason for my detailed dissertation is... HOW DO YOU SET THE HOOK WHEN A FISH HITS THE TEASER? I might have been the only boat to even hit a fish yesterday so it does work, but how can you insure a good hookset? I didn't have any tangles with the flasher rig when I brought them in or while fishing them so I really want to make this work, the potential is huge, I love the idea of doubling your chances. Was listening to the show while we fished, really wanted to call in with a radio fish. HELP?

Well,... First off...
CONGRATULATIONS ON HOOKING A FISH IN THE TULALIP BUBBLE!!!
That, my friend is an angling achievement in and of itself!

Seriously, I'm glad you hooked one on the slider spoon and I hope it's one of many you encounter with this unique technique!

Setting the hook with the slider is a matter of paying close attention to your gear and reacting quickly when you see that rod tip start to wiggle!
You have to grab the rod, crank up the slack, swing for the fences and crank for all you're worth!!!

It also helps if you hit the throttle on the trolling motor too! Moving the boat quickly forward helps keep the tension up on your gear more than you may think!

Good luck and remember... you may have lost that fish...but, would you have hooked him without the slider spoon???

If you had the fish for 5 to 6 minutes. The loss was not because of a bad hookset..


Do yourself a favor and modify that Coho Killer (if you haven't already) add the swivel just above the hook.

It did have a swivel on it and what do you mean by stinger hook... are you putting a second hook below the siwash (which is what I use with the swivel) or is that the hook you use instead of the original (when you use the term stinger, it implies an additional hook)? And Nelly you are right, that fish really got my heart pumping (at my age that's important, LOL, kinda like a natural pacemaker) and nope we didn't have another hit all day on the standard gear. We did bag 9 really big dungies to save the day tho. Can you imagine the mayhem that will be humpie season using the teaser on both sides, can you imagine having a quadruple on 2 rods... YIKES! Might have to use that technique for the S4S event just to spice things up .

Stinger is what Owner calls them. I use it in place of the original hook.

So if you had 100' of line out and got hit roughly half way down on the slider, did you bring any lines up shallower to find another king? Just curious.
I might have to try that set up this year. I troll a lot with two poles out, but could have four lures with this method , hmmmm.

Interested in what lures you can run? only coho killers or could you potentially run a plug? or would there be too much drag there?

LndShrk thanks I figured that out from the link and ordered some for myself. Yes we did move up in the water column but also were still fishing the second spoon on each line. I was using a special made heavy duty coho killer and from the way it behaved, I don't know why you couldn't use a plug.

Nelly are we certain that fishing this extra rig with an extra hook falls within the regs???

Marine area rules
Hook and line angling - Unless noted differently, only one line with up to 2 hooks is allowed.

So if you only have one hook on each lure I suspect it would be OK. However, I have seen some guys that like to fish three hooks on their herring, apparently that is not allowed in salt water (fresh water regs allow 3 hooks).

So I suppose if you were fishing spoons on the bottom and the teaser it would be legal but what if you fished a hootchie on the bottom with 2 hooks, does that make it illegal?
