San Juan Island Chinook Opener!

Postby Nelly » Thu Jul 04, 2013 6:21 am

Marine Area 7, better known as the San Juan Islands opened to mixed reports on Monday July first.
With a low-exchange set of tides that forced anglers to fish a weak flood for most of the morning, concentrations of bait -and therefore fish- would be tough to locate.

After trying a couple other locations, Dave Pridemore of 710 ESPN Seattle found this chunky Thatcher Pass hatchery chinook that is headed for a July 4th barbeque!

Other Rosario Strait locations were producing sporadic bites. Pt. Lawrence, Eagle Bluff and Thatcher Pass to name a few.

Gary Sorenson fishing with Lee Andersen boated this dandy, a 25 pound unclipped fish likely headed for the Frasier River in British Columbia

Nice fish Nelly. We made the run from Everett Tuesday, fished Decatur and Cypress Island and did not touch a thing. Hopefully Area 9 will be productive on the 16th.

We managed to hook a couple more in Rosario Strait today. Although fishing is not what you could call hot, there are definitely a few around.

With those needle fish squids how long do you run the leaders? I was trying one out the other day and a 40inch leader just seemed too long.
