Welcome aboard 'slayer!
For downrigger fishing, I've completely converted over to braid with a monofilament "top shot".
What I mean by that is filling your reel with 50-70 pound braid and uni-knotting a 30-foot piece of 25 pound high visibility monofilament to the end of the braid.

By using this line technology hybrid, you enjoy no-stretch fish fighting, the thickness of the mono in your releases and the low diameter of the braid and therefore low water friction while deep trolling! thumbup

See you on the water! 8-)

I have no clue what a uni knot is... perhaps a segment on the show or a video? Listened with interest Saturday when you were talking about it and it makes a lot of sense. Thx

Never mind, just googled it and came across an incredible resource called videofishingknots.com.
They called it a double uni-knot when using to attach 2 lines together and they have 70 other knots with short video descriptions that make it very easy to understand and tie... check it out.

I run straight braid 40lb hi vis..
use the Scotty hairtrigger releases with the braid. Works great. No false releases.

If you go straight braid just do not use those chain swivels. A larger good quality bearing swivel works the best to keep any twist out.

Shrk- do you mean use a bearing swivel to connect your main line braid to leader or mono topshot to leader. Just want to clarify.

Hey Rock,

I do not run top shot. I use bearing swivel with a golf tee direct to the braid. Flasher gets clipped on that. Leader off flasher is mono. 30,40,or 50lb depending on what I am fishing.
