Skagit County Report

FRESHWATER
The Skagit has been pretty decent for silver fishermen throughout the system. A couple of Holiday Sports employees fished in the Concrete area with spoons (Dick Nites) and managed to get multiple chrome bright fish weighing up to 13 pounds. One customer that has been fishing almost daily lately has managed to limit almost every day in the mid river around Burlington. His largest fish so far was a 16 pounder. He noted that most of the fish he's been catching have been chrome bright. He's casting spinners and spons but spin casting Brads Wigglers has also remained a good bet for silvers. The crowds are down a bit now that hunting season has started for both waterfowl and deer.

SALTWATER
The San Juans have been putting out a few blackmouth for fishermen in Rosario Straight. There are a few silvers still around but the targeted species have transitioned over to winter blackmouth as we get further into October. Fishermen can use bait now without worrying about the high concentrations of dogfish. There have been a few reports of decent silver fishing in the straights though so we might get another good shot of them locally.

The late crabbing season has afforded some great crabbing opportunities that we haven't had for quite a few years. The news realease is below regarding areas. Remember to record your catch on the winter catch card. If you weren't issued a winter card, stop by and get one free of charge if you purchased your summer card.

HUNTING
The opening of duck/goose seasons was on Saturday. Weather hasn't been too great for hunting but opening day was reportedly pretty good for most hunters. Snow goose hunting has been pretty good on Fir Island due to the good numbers of birds down already. A few hunters were in this morning and said that they did very well yesterday on snows and a few specks.

Deer hunting is now open for modern firearms. A few nice blacktail have come in from local areas. I hunted in the Winthrop area on opening weekend. My cousins and I managed to bag two nice mulies and a nice whitetail on their property. There were fewer hunters than normal and hunting was a little slower than usual for public land hunting. The second weekend might provide good hunting for migrating bucks as the temps up high were pretty cool at night and there was a little bit of snow on the pass.

Thanks Robbo just what I was looking for was a report on the Skagit when I got back into town. Scheduled a trip with Johnny "Coho" for Thursday in the upper end of the river so stay tuned for my report! I love this time of year as you never know what it might be either Coho or Chum and I do love those Dogs

Better late than never sending in a report on my Thursday Nov 3rd's trip with Johnny Coho I suppose but I'm retired and I am really a busy guy! The day started out with a steady rain but after about an hour the weather lifted and sun started to peek out and the fish decided to cooperate! Classic day on the upper Skagit with eagles flying everywhere and snow on Mt Sauk and the surrounding peaks! Before I forget there were a few of these nice coho left to be found up there too! A few chum around but not the numbers I expected. Headed up next Tuesday and I'll report back in then!
