Bothell angler takes top prize in the Edmonds Coho Derby

The Edmonds Coho Derby was held today at the Edmonds Marina, and the winning 12 pound-12.48 ounce coho was caught by Daniel Humphries of Bothell and earned him $5,000.
Humphries was fishing near Double Bluff in northern Puget Sound when he hooked the coho at 7:45 a.m. on a green squid with a green flasher.
"We caught and released a chinook and got another 6 or 7 pound coho, and this was the first time I've ever placed in a derby," Humphries said. "I did the Everett Coho Derby last year."
Tony Floor, director of fishing affairs for the Northwest Marine Trade Association and the Northwest Salmon Derby Series says 806 anglers participated in the one-day tournament and weighed-in 284 coho.
"That more than doubles last year's catch in the derby which was 145 coho," Floor said. "It was hot, but overall it was pretty good especially without any big weather change to push more ocean coho in."
