Tom wasn't the only one catching fish in Nootka Sound

Tom Nelson wasn’t the only one catching fish last week out of Nootka Sound Resort. I took my wife, Nancy, on The Outdoor Line August 25 – 28 trip. What a place!! They put us up in what’s called The Executive Quarters building. Our room was larger than most motel rooms, with windows on three sides, two comfortable queen beds, and our own bath. I know lots of places advertise gourmet food, but at NSR it’s for real. Amazing presentation (the cooks are artists), intricate flavors, and you’re not just eating the days’ catch. For example, we had fancy baked chicken quarters and smoked on-site pork loin on consecutive nights. Each dinner is preceded by “Appy” hour served around the fire pit. One night was cioppino and garlic bread; another was grilled ribs; and another was crab with melted butter and spring rolls made with fresh veggies from the garden float. The staff was attentive, numerous, and very friendly. Our boat was a 30’ ProLine with twin 300 horse Suzuki outboards, fast and roomy.

So how about the fishing? Our first half day was tough. The rain that Tom talked about in his blog sent most fish upriver and scattered the rest. We spent our first full day in the ocean, trying to find a concentration of salmon. After a slow morning, we stopped trolling and loaded up on lings, yelloweye, and rockfish. For our second full day, our guide, Tristan, played a hunch and took us to one of his old haunts. OMG. Scenery and salmon like you can only imagine. We saw bears, sea lions, humpback whales, sea otters…and salmon…and salmon…and salmon. We didn’t cull fish, keeping our limit from the first fish caught. Then we switched to catch and release. It was amazing. The action was constant, the kings just kept getting bigger, and the bite lasted all day. It was August 27th, my Nancy’s birthday and my best fishing day ever. Cosmic, I hear you. A trip to Nootka sure beat buying Nancy a new lawnmower. I took the advice of "The Doctor of Love".

Only kidding. Nootka was a great place for Nancy, who appreciates good food and doesn't like roughing it.
