Kenai pumping out legends...

Postby JWhit » Fri Jul 15, 2011 8:32 pm

It's finally happened. The Kenai caught fire briefly this week. Good news for sure and long overdue. Honesty this is the best fishing we have seen in quite some time but I am reporting this with some caution. It's still early, and reliable sources have us getting restricted to no bait at midnight monday night. The numbers are still low and in my opinion this is a welcome change in the ADF&G's management plan. Many people have been asking why we are going to bait with the best fishing we have seen in recent memory and the short long answer is this. The numbers are more representitive of the run now with the new method of weighting the sonar counts with the kreel data and test net data. In short we should have been restriceted for years running now. Secondly the water conditions are spectacular. We are enjoying absolutely perfect water conditions for Chinook fishing raising our exploitation rate in the sport fishery. I believe the ACTUAL number of fish we have in river at the moment may be slightly higher than we have had the past few years but they are still lower than we would like. Bottom line is fishing is really good. I have been releasing multiple trophy kings every day for the past two weeks. Try running K16's if you like putting big ones in the bag and the egg bite has been unusually good for this time of year but they are taking mostly small rats and trout.

tight lines,
Johnny

Should I be jealous that your 10 year old niece has caught a bigger salmon than me? Nice fish!

Those are genuine Cabelas fleece and extra tuffs robbo. One of the perks of being a C&R guy is u get wet a lot. No need to be jealous Tobeck, just get on a plane and come visit bud. My 12 yr old nephew got a bigger one and I ended the week releasing 7 fish over 48 inches.
