Which do you use and why?

Hey LM,
Great question!
For me it's solid tie mooching leaders and I tie them myself.
While I've heard horror stories of slip tie leaders breaking when the top hook slides down forcibly to the bottom hook, I've never personally experienced it.
By tieing my own leaders, I have control of all elements: hook size, leader material strength and the all-important gap between the hooks.
If I'm fishing green label herring (6"-7"), I keep a four-finger gap between the hooks which is about three inches.
Keep your hooks on pipe insulation leader holders! They are a great way to keep your leaders organized!

Solid tie for me as well... as with nelly I tie my own but I store a little differently. I put mine in little bags individually and clip on a McMahon clip with a loop on end of leader.

The top hook can be adjusted to whatever length you want and locks into place. The hooks and leader are good quality as well.

Good thing you said "about three inches" cause with the size of your hands aint no way four fingers is only three inches. Is the Mrs. the one that is really tieing your leaders?

Is that three inches from hook point to hook point ot eye to eye. Would you bump up to 5/0 for blue label?

5/0 octopus is about right for blue label herring and you can add another inch to the length between the hooks too! You just have to go with what feels right! A four inch space between leaders for blue label looks right to me! 8-)

Ive been tying the 4/0 front hook and 5/0 trailing. Your Mileage May Vary...
