Westport Salmon

Postby BigBankWA » Tue Jul 12, 2011 8:38 am

Monday was a FABULOUS day on the ocean. I have fished out of Westport for over 35 years and this was easilly one of the top 10 days for ocean conditions...can you say bathtub!!!

We targeted the area around GH in about 150ft of water, and within 15 minutes of setting down my brother had our first CHINOOK of the day, a dandy 12 lber. 10 minutes later it was my turn, and as usual...mine was bigger...a sweet 17lber. The fishing wasn't RED HOT...and once you opened up a stomach it was easy to see why...every fish we caught was STUFFED with 3-5 anchovies. It took most of the day but we got our limits and headed in about 3PM with 8 salmon (4 kings 4 silvers) with the kings being 12-18 lbs and the silvers 7-10 lbs.

We fished 2 staggered downriggers between 45 and 90 feet throughout the day and two light lines with 5 oz leads on sliders with 60ft of line out. We drug a couple of spoons at times, but all the fish came on WHOLE HERRING rigged with a toothpick for spin. The coho seemed larger than usual for this time of year. Only released a couple with extra fins, and only lost 2 chinook to the dreaded spit hook....one was easilly 25lbs. I will try to upload the video my brother shot of the Catch-Release-Catch effort we made on the 17-lber...
