Early July Fishing Report
It’s the start of July and we’re at the lodge full time now so drop by to have a meal; have your fish vacuum packaged; spend the night or head home to the big Tahsis. The derby is on starting the 1st of July with Maui Jim and Nootka Island Fishing Club offering up the prizes. All proceeds will go to local Salmon Enhancement.
Early inside fishing is producing 15 to 25 pound Chinook. Fishing the rocks has been reel productive for Coho. I heard rumour of a 36 pounder but have only a confirmed 26 pound catch. Still great fishing and a good sign of what’s to come! The offshore fishing is going to be electric. The Halibut continues to impress! Many over 100 lbs are being released with the 50 lbs and under going home. It’s good to see that when informed, we act on how to keep the stocks healthy.
The new fishing regulations are posted with nothing changed from last year. After the 15th of July any Chinook over 77 centimetres has to be released if it is caught inside the surf line. Coho caught on the inside can be wild or hatchery. Coho on the outside must be hatchery with the clipped adipose fin. Salmon retention is four Chinook and four Coho. Halibut are one a day for a total of 2 in possession. The Department of Fisheries web site is www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/rec for all information for BC fishing. The site to buy your fishing licenses is www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/recfish/licensing.
Looking forward to fishing with those of you that make your way to the lodge this summer and a great summer to all.
