No google needed. Black tips on the fins plus the opaque markings behind the head above the gillplates say Vermillion. Though I thought they were more of a southern WCVI-NorCal speicies. Many are released in WA coastal waters because people automaticly think they're yelloweye or canaries.

Another fairly rare one, at least down this way.

That's one funky looking feesh Blakester! Sent the photo to a friend at NOAA and hope to get an ID on that there critter. I thought the rockfish was a vermillion also, but the fish checker called it a short raker. I'm stickin' with vermillion...yes Teachers Pet...you are correct

Will post some more off color rockfishes as we catch'em 8-)

We have a positive ID on that fish Blake. Turns out those fish eat the ctenophore jellyfish that have been out there in huge numbers this summer. I'll try to get a photo of one of those on my next charter. Interesting looking jelly fishes for sure. Here ya go:

"Dr. James Orr who heads that group (at NOAA) identified the photo titled Zasil_ul.jpg (in the thread) as a Prowfish (Zaprora silenus). It is commonly caught in trawls on the continental slope, so probably seaward of where you encountered it. Benthic in habits and feeds on jelllyfish and ctenophores."

Gotta love the Tiger rocks. Never seen one as red as J.D.'s. Very cool fish!

Caught this one in 300 feet of water a couple weeks back. It was mixed in with the yelloweye we were catching and was about the same size...around 8 to 10 pounds. Haven't seen too many with this coloration before. I'm calling it a canary...any else care to chime in :?:
