Westport Halibut

Postby Salmonhawk » Wed May 11, 2011 11:55 am

Took the boat to fish halibut yesterday with my business partner Paul. We had to work hard for our halibut but landed our limit. We fished in 550 to 650ft of water out 40 miles to Grays Canyon using squid, herring, and mackeral and lot's of scent. There were quite a few charter boats as well as a few private boats in the area and after talking to the fish checker it appears that the bite was pretty spotty. Those that worked it all day got fish though. We also stopped and hit a lingcod spot on the way in for some easy limits of ling as well. All in all a great day out on the ocean.

Just curious to you use electric reels for that deep? If so when you hook one do you electrically reel that up?

I do not use electric reels. To me, it takes one element of the fight away. I do however see the relevance of having one when it comes to checking bait or picking up to move to a different spot. Halibut fishing that deep is definitely work.
