118 Tickets were sold to all but four chapters.
14 Fish were weighed in total.
First Place Ken Unkrur- $800.00 PSA Sno-King
Second Place Jack Stadeford $500.00 PSA Sno-King
Third Place John Keaser $300.00 PSA Sno-King&North Kitsap
Fourth Place Derrick Dittes $200.00 PSA Sno-King
Mystery fish Gary Wiegand $200.00 PSA Fidalgo
9.48 pound fish closest to the 9.4 preselected weight

I got my first report of the morning from John Hansen (Sno-King) at 8:30. He reported 4 hatchery fish in the boat by 8:10! It sounded pretty slow out there from the radio chatter otherwise. Monique and Scott Baker (derby chairs) were able to fish the derby, but Scott’s back after recent surgery had him hurting pretty bad. They put the derby together and did all of the leg work. Thanks to the both of you and hope Scott is OK.

This forum has lacked fish porn lately.

Some good fishing buddies brought their boat over to this side of the pond with a intention of fishing this derby that was hosted by the Snoking Chapter. Scott and Monique Baker actually did all the work and Ron and Kevin staffed the weight in. The said they got room for a 4th and I jumped all over it knowing what the fishing has been like in MA6 the last month or so, specifically out on the banks. Seen some really nice fish to go with at times fast fishing lately.

They pulled in Friday morning and gave Midchannel a go (I could get to PT until the evening). They got into fish on the outgo. Something to keep in mind for Saturday incase we couldn't poke our nose around Point Wilson.

Image

Saturday's tide was telling me that there would be a good morning bite once is started moving. So after rounding Pt Wilson at first light we pointed the boat west while intently listening to WX4. 15kts at Smith Is, 3ft @ 4 seconds ath the Hien Bank buoy, and 27kts at Race Rock. Venturing outside of Dungeness spit was out of the question in our 20ft boat. We coulda go out there, but not in time for the best part of the tide. Plus, the wind could've gotten worse and fishing was gonna be hard out there with the wind/current. So plan "B", with lots of experience fishing that old Disco Bay derby within the ol' boundary, I wasn't intimidated to give the area a go to try and stratch out a dandy. We were fishing shortly after 7am.

Minutes into the first pass with three rods while the current indicator on the chartplotter read 0.0mph...

Image

Get reset now down a rod to only two. Before we even get back to our bucket...

Image

We're in a bite so we ditch the third rod all together and get gear in the water asap...

Image

Three teener fish in the first pass. Now only one for a boat limit, but we were hoping for a true dandy. And right on Cue...

Image

4th fish in the net, all clipped, and we had a decision to make. Release it and stay in this bite hoping for that toad, or bonk it and head back into MA9 where they got into 'em the day before where we got a two (clipped) fish limit and try to get our dandy there. We left after only an hour of fishing and the current indicator only read 0.4kts when we left.

There was action at midchannel too. We had three take downs on the first pass landing one wild fish and loosing another nice fish. Hooked two more in consective passes, loosing one that jumped multipe times right off the bow of Bill Deaver's boat, and landing another 24"ish clipped fish. Being as we could only weigh in one fish each were were happy with the four we had.

Ended up placing 2nd, 4th, and 7th. Covered all expenses including hotel and such. Again thanks to all who put the outing together. Looking forward to this event getting bigger and better in years to come. And thanks to Jack and crew for the invite! I'm glad you guys got to see spring blackmouth fishing about as good as it gets!

Now that's a fine piece of angling there JD! I'm beginning to see why you moved out to PA!

I'm looking forward to a little halibut action out your way in early May!

Thanks for the killer post and you're right, we needed more fish pics!!!

Good job to all that proticapated.

Always nice to see some fish porn. Been a tough winter/spring for the PS guys. So I can understand why we haven't seen much porn.

PSA knows how to put on a good derby. I had a lot of fun at the Everett and Anacortes derbies.
