Old reel help

Postby DBcougar » Sun May 25, 2014 3:16 pm

I came across some old reel's that belonged to my father. I cannot find any info on 1 of them and I was also looking for any advice on if I can re-purpose any of them in the near future. Brief history, my father passed many years ago when I was very young, I was not of the age to absorb any of his fishing knowledge or have any experiences with the found fishing gear. My father was a very avid outdoors man he hunted and steelhead fished extensively. I am not sure on the year of many of these and what they were initially intended for. I am very new to wanting to learn as much about fishing as I can. The reels are as follows: Pflueger Bond 2004 (appears to be spooled with dacron line), Shimano Bantam 201SG, Abu Ambassadeur 5001C.

If I am wrong on any of this info, that is why I am asking for anyone's help with these so that I have my information correct. From what I have found online the Shimano Bantam is a pretty decent Stealhead reel, I believe it has a line capacity of 160yds/10 lb with a 4.3/1 gear ratio. The Abu Ambassadeur seems to have been a very popular level wind reel, line capacity 195yds/12lb with 5.1/1 gear ratio. The one I am absolutely stumped on is the Pflueger Bond 2004, I cannot find any information on it anywhere online. I am curious to know its line capacity and gear ratio if anyone might know.

As for re-purposing any of them, they may be too old to do so and they hold some sentimental significance. They are all in very good condition, might need a little cleaning and oiling to get them tip top. I was thinking the Shimano could be used for trout or kokanee, the Abu possibly for pinks and coho, but the Pflueger, since I cannot find any info on it, I am at a loss.

If anyone might have any useful information it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Most of the parts for either the Shimano Bantam 201SG or the Abu Ambassadeur 5001C will not be available (bearings (aftermarket) and what not is about all) Collectors clubs maybe.

If you wish to fish these reels then do so very carefully and kokanee will be great for those as will steelhead. I would not use them in salt-water at all!
I still use shimano bantam mags for steelhead and kokanee but i rebuild all my own reels.

As for the Pflueger Bond 2004 put it away and keep it like it is-back in about the late 70's to the early 80's some major changes were made in the pflueger line of reels and no parts will be available. That being said there are some old fishing reel collectors and clubs that may have some availability for parts. Do a lot of searches on the internet for clubs and collectors
If those reels have been sitting for that many years they need a major cleaning and relubing and adjusting-

Myself I would just put them into boxes or on a shelf where they can be looked at and passed along to future generations.

Thank you for the reply. I was very much hesitant to ever use them since they are so old and thru some internet searches that they would be next to impossible to repair if anything were to break. I am just super curious on the pflueger since it has little to no info online about it.

Thanks again.
