On Chelan, it’s still worthwhile, albeit not as good as it has been to fish the deep water above the Narrows early in the morning. Worden Lures T4 Flatfish in Luminous Chartreuse, Mack’s Lures Cha Cha Squidders and Silver Horde’s Ace Hi Flies were the most productive Lures up there during the reporting period. Depths of 310 to 350 feet worked best. Hitting the lower basin has been different as the fish are really grouped together. You’ve got to find and mark piles of fish and work hard to get them to bite. Silver Horde’s Ace Hi Flies have worked best in here. The rocky areas between Sunnybank and the Monument have been very productive for eating size fish. Hands down, Worden Lures F7 Flatfish in either Luminous Chartreuse or Purple Glow worked best here. Stay on your toes, trying to fish near the bottom here. Snagging is an issue.
The kokanee are very visible on our sonar in a variety of locations, but have not been caught in great numbers yet. They are looking bigger than usual this year with 14 inchers being the norm.
Your fishing tip of the week is to prepare a plan and a plan B when you are getting ready to go fish. Our time on the water is way too valuable to waste bobbing around while rigging. Have your plan ready to go before you launch. Also, have a contingency plan rigged if Plan A doesn’t work. That way, you can be much more efficient catching fish when you are on the water. An example would be to have casting rods rigged for throwing spinners at the shoreline early and trolling rods rigged for deepwater work once the sun is high in the sky.
The kid’s tip of the week is to practice casting in the yard before taking them to a crowded venue to fish. I’ve seen parents get flustered when their kids cast into someone else’s zone. If they practice up before they hit the water, it is a much less stressful event for everyone.
Your safety tip of the week is to stay alert for woody debris on Lake Chelan. With the lake filling, there is plenty of it out there. Keep a sharp lookout matey!
