The next stop on the Northwest Salmon Derby Series is the Bellingham Derby

Derby Chairman Roy Lentz submits the following:

Here is an update on the derby. Fishing is unbelievable. I heard of boats hooking up to 14 fish looking for the monster. Although I was not on it, my boat caught the first place fish for the day.
Total adult participants 311. Kids 47. I just heard that someone caught a 35 pounder this morning, but that is not confirmed yet.

The 2011 Bellingham Salmon Derby is off to a great start. Over 300 Adult derby contestants and 47 kids plied the waters of the San Juan Islands seeking the elusive King Salmon. A total of 104 fish were weighed in the first day, an all time record for the derby. Fishing is reported as being "fantastic". Many boats hooked and released multiple fish trying to catch the biggest one in hopes of winning the $5,000 first prize. But any fish on the leader board is sure to be rewarded with a great prize.

The top ten fish in the adult derby at the end of the day Friday were:

Shawn Ensley 31.95 lbs

Kip Smith 31.50

Kevin Geoghagan 31.00

Ron Lamperes 30.50

Steve Rietman 29.40

Randy Geoghagan 28.22

Dan Johnson 27.40

Breanne Hendricks 25.68

Troy Jensen 25.32

Don Radder 25.28

With Saturday's results not yet final and Sunday's half day ahead, it's anybody's derby!
