Crossing the Bar

I was thinking about going out of Westport to do some fishing. I have never crossed the bar before so I am looking for some tips. I have herd you want to cross when the currents are changing. I know it can get a little lumpy out there.

I would listen or check the bar report prior to crossing each time in and out. The most dangerous time to cross the bar in my opinion is coming in, most folks will cross going out and gain confidence if they cross with ease; the challenging part is to drop in on a when it is breaking and you cannot tell the depth on the backside. An old saying when in doubt power out holds true, don't let your boat slow down, or get overtaken by a and lose control. You can always stop by the Coast Guard station and talk to some of the BM's there and get some tips. I would be careful this weekend with the large ebb tide. Good luck
