Halibut in the River

Postby onwhiskeycreek » Sat Jul 26, 2014 5:26 pm

We had the first bunch of pinks come into the river this last week ahead of the main run with the rain. Took some visiting friends up into the estuary and the mouth of the river and there teenage daughters had a ball catching pinks. When the tide was ebbing we started heading back down the estuary to the bay and spooked a group of about 6 chickens in 3 feet of water and was amazed to find them up in the river channel with about a 3 or 4 knot ebb. Went down another 100 yards and there was halibut in the 80 pound range laying in the channel. We have caught a lot of halibut in the bay just in front of the river, but this was the first time we had seen them up in the river channel in the estuary. Guess it was easy pickings catching pinks in the shallow river channel. May have to start a new sport of side drifting or fly fishing for halibut.
