Spent some time drifting and bouncing bait off the bottom. We caught several dogfish and one small butt we sent back to grow up. Then all of a sudden, my son-in-law's pole just gets slammed, he fights it for a few minutes, pulling lots of drag and the rod is bouncing up and down - then nothing. I figured the hooks must have pulled out or something. He reels it in and I see his spreader bar is broken. It wasn't very old, and only been in the water once or twice, and hadn't caught a fish or been snagged on the bottom. Has this ever happened to anyone else? If so, this could be another good reason to use the tuna cord set up Robbo & Nelly talk about in their video. Recently one of my regular fishing buddies and I have been talking about critical points of failure that can cause you to loose a big one (bad swivels, old or nicked line, etc.) I might add spreader bars to this list!
Still, we had a nice day on the water and came home with two limits of shrimp.
