Fishing for Porpoise!

Postby Robbo » Fri Aug 26, 2011 8:34 pm

Every day in SE Alaska is an adventure! Yesterday we're offshore about 8 miles bouncing a sandy hump for some halibut and other cellar dwellars when a big school of Dahl porpoise surrounds the boat. Musta been 15 to 20 of them doing hot laps around the boat and they were very close, some ripping the surface just ten feet away. What an awesome deal!

After about 10 minutes of admiring the incredible sight of these porpoise Keith hooks up and his reel starts screaming. Low and behold...a porpoise sky rockets out of the water marlin-style about a hundred yards away and it's DOLPHIN ON!!!!!!

After a couple minutes of backing down hard on Flipper to try to gain some ground Arnold says "WHOOOOOA!" As he was cranking up from the bottom another one smacked his scampi tail and now we're doubled on fricking PORPOISE!

After a few more minutes of intense line peeling the two crossed paths and the lines got all twisted up, pulling both jigs out. I was hoping to get close to them to cut the line so they wouldn't have to swim around with 400 plus feet of braided line. Fortunately they took care of business on their own and we didn't have to worry about it.

I had this happen one other time out by Corononation Island a few years back while jigging for halibut, but that was only one porpoise...not a dawg gone double header for crying out loud

They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
No-one you see, is smarter than he,
And we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
Flying there-under, under the sea!
Everyone loves the king of the sea,
Ever so kind and gentle is he,
Tricks he will do when children appear,
And how they laugh when he's near!
They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
No-one you see, is smarter than he,
And we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
Flying there-under, under the sea!
Next time, chase Flipper with your main engine and you may have better success landing.
