WFO King Salmon Bite!

Postby Robbo » Fri Jul 08, 2011 6:56 pm

No rain today, so I decided to pack the GoPro camera along again to record some of the action. We dropped into a totally retarded king salmon bite already in progress. When I pulled into the area AKKings was tripled up, Rafael got there seconds ahead of me and was already tripped up, and nets were flying everywhere. My guys dropped their worms to the bottom and all four rods lit up. The down side was that the water on the ocean was really sloppy and it didn't take long to get a Blackhawk Down on my boat. Bummer deal! We got what we needed and headed for calmer waters immediately to help his poor stomach.

Here's the unedited GoPro video:

Very cool! Those GoPro cams are one heck of a lot easier than running around and trying to film stuff yourself!
Unfortunately (or very fortunately) you get some incriminating evidence on film...
I'm finishing up a edit that will illustrate that point... ;)

Funny that you noticed Brandon. Took a hook to the left eye about 7 or 8 years ago. Bad deal. Pouring down rain and blowing like hell so I tossed my glasses in the cabin and was going to clean them up when I got a chance. Three 'hos jump on seconds later and I forgot about the glasses. Gaffed #1, gaffed #2, and when I schwacked #3 over the noggin a big swell hit at the exact same time and stretched the leader out as far as it could go. The hook popped out of the fishes mouth at exactly the same time as the swell hit AND I connected with the back of the gaff on the fish, stretching it out even further. Like getting shot in the eye with a bb gun. Blind in that eye for most of the rest of the summer and still have a little fuzziness. I was really tired that day and grabbed the leader up high, which allowed the leader to stretch out like a bungee cord. Stupid move! Now I choke them up short so if the hooks do pop out they can't go far.

I've been uploading the raw GoPro vids so folks can see everything and it's interesting that you caught that. One of my "buddies" up here said I look like an overgrown ape...and after watching one of the videos I would have to agree with that. We got some video today with four kings on at once and the royal cluster###k that ensued. Might take a few days to get that one up. White, white, white hot king salmon fishing this morning!

Its always scary when you have fish near the boat and your trying to deal with it and know at some point the lead or hooks could pop out.
On that note, just three days ago, I guy on my boat had a king on and it started jumping around and stuff when all the sudden about 50 feet away I watch the hooks pop out and sling shot right towards us. I immedeatly turn my head and duck for cover. When I turn back around the guy is hold his you know what and say "the sinker hit me in the F###in nuts!" He was Ok but every time he hooked up after that everyone made sure to remind of it.
