BC Fishing Report - August 2012
There have been lots of chinook and coho right from the beach all the way off shore. Catala Island has been incredible - we've had multiple days with 20-30 salmon. Coyote spoons in silver green, silver blue and kermit have all been working great. Anchovies rolled in a teaser head have also been working well. Betsy, UV green, and silver blue are some of my favorites. Most of the chinook are in the 18 to 30lb range. We have not scene many fish over 30lbs. Offshore salmon fishing is good all around the highway. Forteen mile has been better than eight most of the days. The majority of fish are being taken from 100-160ft down.
Halibut fishing has been incredible. I have never scene more consistent halibut fishing than this summer. We had five fish over 100lbs in August. Three of these fish were released. The largest measuring around 80 inches, and estimated at 250lbs!
We have been fishing a few new spots that have been producing a lot of snapper and ling cod. We also tried one new spot that produced a few black cod (sablefish). If your are not familiar with black cod, this is because when it is commercially fished it is caught very deep, sometimes up to 8000 feet down. We were fishing just over 400 feet. With great weather most of the month we have been able to get off shore almost every day.
