March 2012 Fishing Report and Newsletter

As most of you know by now the Halibut season opened up for us on March 1st. We had five good tides to fish around Victoria during the first week. Due to a couple of windy days we only got out for three of them, but had great success. We were able to get our one fish limit per person each day, minus one fish on the opener. We got into some better than average fish with only one fish in the thirties, and the rest over 45lbs, and 90lbs being the largest.

Salmon fishing was fairly consistent as well. We were hitting fish in Whirl Bay and Pedder bay on hoochies fished within twenty feet of the bottom. We didn't see too many fish over 10lbs, but they were great scrappers.

I was able to break in the new 300hp on the NO DOUBT. This extra 50hp is what this boat needed, and it cruises very comfortable at 30kts and tops out at 43kts. I am in the process of adding another boat for the summer at the lodge, so keep your ears peeled. I am looking at a 28 footer with twin 225's on it. This will be my new machine, so any who is with me will be able to enjoy this new boat. For all you guys who get a little tired because of all the fish we put you on, you will still be able to enjoy your quick naps between your turn on the rod.
We have some great Halibut tides coming up in April. There are a few of them open now due to a cancellation. Give me a shout if you want to get a start on putting some fish in the freezer.

The summer bookings at the lodge are going great. I have a few single boat spots left in July and August. There are two spots near the end of August for any larger groups left. June is also filling up nicely, and I am still offering free vac packing and airline boxes for dates booked in June. It looks like we are going to be open up on the inside for large Chinooks after the 15th of July. This is something we haven't seen in four years; giving some of you that don't like the big water, a great option. Halibut is going to be a two fish possession, and it looks like we should have the entire season (until December 31) open.
