Resurrection Pre-game – Jeff Head Blackmouth

Postby Saharit » Wed Nov 27, 2013 10:15 pm

Had an opportunity to target blackmouth this morning. We wanted to get some time on the water in preparation for the upcoming Resurrection Derby.

We first mooched the flood from Yeomalt Pt. to Wing Pt. Marked a lot of fish but no takers on red label whole herring. After a number of passes and an increasing northerly pushing us too fast, pulled out the downriggers and shot up to Jeff Head.

Good amount of shakers but we managed to land 2 keepers.

Unfortunately lost 2 more to seals that seemed to have AIS tracking on my boat.

Interestingly the larger blackmouth had very pale, almost white meat.

Nelly, is that just a pigment issue associated with the fish’s diet or could it be a “white” or “ivory” blackmouth? Sure was tasty…of course wifey claimed that it was her cooking.

Nice blackmouth Troy. Thanks for helping me decide where to go tomorrow. We'll definitely be hitting Jeff Head in hopes of a couple of nice blackmouth. Before the Apple Cup of course thumbup

Hey Troy, here's a link to a thread discussing why Chinook have differing flesh pigmentation:
