Sekiu Fishing Report

Postby Frankie B's Tackle » Mon Jul 15, 2013 3:20 pm

We just returned from 8 days at Sekiu testing our lights and lures. We put 27 kings in the boat and released 100’s of pinks, silvers and jacks. We also released some of the biggest finned kings we have ever caught. One of them was so big it would not fit in or jumbo net. I know…… nothing but a fishing story, we’ll I was willing to forgo any potential ticket and started to pull it up to get a photo and it bent the net handle so bad I thought it would break so I just let it go. This fish refused to get close to the boat, it took us 20 minutes just to get it close enough to net and even then because of his size we had to have the net under water so when he dove down he went head first into the net. Pretty exciting stuff, so what did we catch this monster on? A purple haze UV North Pacific hoochie with one of our blue mini fishing lights, 32” leader, and a white glow/jelly back hotspot flasher (slightly modified). Where did we catch this fish??? On our second day out we started running east from Sekiu to get away from the crowds, as we ran we came upon a couple old times drifting with herring on the beach, we pull up and got our gear down, giving them plenty of room. As we watched with our binoculars to our amazement they we’re catching fish after fish and releasing 10lb kings. The reason was clear, they were on the hunt, and it paid off! These old guys put 4 real nice fish in the boat in about 45 minutes. As soon as they left we swooped in and bang took us about 1.5 hours and we had our biggest fish of the trip (18lb’s) and three others that were bigger than most we were seeing at the dock. Needless to say we spent the rest of the time fishing that area. According to the fish checker we were consistently bring in more good size fish than any other boat. We had 1-2 teener’s a day and also released 1-2 20lb+ finned fish a day. The majority of our fish came on the blue light special. It worked so well we took turns using it.
As far as our new “King Slayers” they didn’t do very well at first but once we put a hoochie on the hook they did better. I think it helped to slow the rolling action. The four colors that did the best were watermelon, red racer, cop car, and always my favorite white. We’re off to Port Townsend for the opener of area 9 and because of the candlefish we think the King Slayers will do better, we’ll post daily reports on or Facebook page and will write a report here when we return next week.
