Sooke winter Salmon fishing has been GOOD! Reports from local anglers have been very consistant,Springs in the 5 to 10lb range have been common at:Sooke Harbour Mouth,the Trailer Park and inside Fraser Island in Beecher Bay. Popular baits have included anchovies,hootchies,and spoons including the still popular Coho Killer from Silver Horde. Some trollers have customized the Coho Killer by changing the hook or adding a small squirt/hootchy,and many are trolling a Kinetic flasher infront of the setup this winter. Lots of winter trollers are relying on the old stand by-anchovies in glow bait heads, rolled quickly behind a bright or glow flasher close to the bottom. We have been having success with any glow/green bait head trolled as close to the bottom as possible on 2REEL2. Was on an Auxillary Coast Guard call on Dec.29th which took us to Beecher Bay where we had the opportunity to talk to 6 or 7 sport fishers trolling for Salmon from Fraser Island to Church Rock. Of course we asked them how the fishing was after our official business was done. Reports were much the same as Sooke,some catching some not,but most boats getting strikes!Crabbing has been hit and miss, but still very worth while to try along the East Sooke shoreline,opposite side of Sooke Harbour. Have had best results with fresh bleeding Salmon heads as bait, put down for 4 to 6 hours only, as any longer usually results in missing traps. Shrimping in the Sooke basin has been good, from reports heard a couple of days ago from a local fisherman who was not having any success at Salmon. The Sooke Boxing Day Salmon Derby was a great time as usual and very worth while. This is a pretty small,very locally popular Derby.$5.00 from every ticket was donated to the Sooke community food bank,and entrants were asked to donate cans of food as well as the $25.00 per person entry fee. This Derby is as much about giving and getting out with friends at Christmas,as it is about trying to win a few hundred dollars. Anne Marie who works for Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina won the Salmon Derby with a fish in the 13lb range,fishing on Eldon Smith's boat-Crab Shack Charters.
