I desperately wanted to squeeze one last Salmon trip in this season before the rest of my year was spent with customers chasing honkers on the East Side. I was hoping to float the Humptulips but I got a poor report from a fishing compadre on Saturday's action. So we changed plans and hit another coastal river I'm not allowed to talk about (fishn buddy code). So we launched my drift boat... looking at an 8 to 9 hour float in what was forcasted to be a rather wet and rainy day. Along with me came long time fishing buddy; Fish Head Fred and Mi Amor Liliana, whom is quite the trooper despite the awful weathered trips I've subjected her to over the years. After Launching the boat I opted to row upriver to the top of the hole about 100yds above. We hoped to find some silvers in a nice looking slot where we had pulled some chrome out a couple weeks earlier. What we found was Chummers, Dogs, Calicos, Tigers, ketas and the snaggletoothed Salmonlasuarus. We thought "What the heck, let's have some fun!" We started laying down the law on these big guys and after a dozen or so we had forgotten all about the silvers we were hoping to find. We began experimenting to see what else we could throw at them that might produce fish. Plugs, jigs, pink worms.... all worked to a degree. I began longing for my spey rod that I had left at home, that would have been a welcomed train wreck. After five hours of arm tiring tug of war we were ready to call it a day. We ended the day with an exceptionaly large buck that absolutely needed a kodak moment. It was one of the most enjoyable non stressful relaxing days of fishing I can remember. We only saw one or two other boats all day and they quietly slipped by us with the gratuitous nod of the head. The whole day was spent within sight of my truck and trailer. I pulled anchor for the first time of the day and we lazily floated down the hole, loaded the boat back on the trailer and drove away grinning.
