Last Cast Bass!! 2

Jul 08, 2010 by Rob Tobeck

As many of you know, I love fishing with my boys.  We've had the good fortune to chase all kinds of fish on a lot of different water but some of our favorite times have been right here on our home waters of Lake Washington.  On any given evening during the spring and summer you have a good chance of spotting us fishing from shore as the sun goes down.  While my son Mason loves those days on the blue water chasing tuna, Madden is happiest casting to some hard fighting bass from shore.

Tonight was one of those nights, shortly after dinner Madden wanted to hit the shore.  I put him off awhile as I wanted to finish my cigar and give the sun time to set behind Mercer Island.  We ended up hitting the water about 8:30 and just like anything with us Tobeck's, it got a little competitive.  I caught the first fish while Madden lost one when talking smack to his Dad.  Shortly after that, I lost one in the same spot as Madden.  Madden in the meantime had moved down the shore a bit and landed his first one.  According to him we were all tied up but I explained that if we remained tied I would win due to the tie-breaker of catching the first fish.

We battled up and down the shore when I caught what I thought would be my second bass of the impromtu tournament.  It turned out to be a perch but the way I figured, it gave me a second tie-breaker.  Time went by as we both lost another fish and I proceeded to talk a little trash as I was feeling pretty confident.  As it came time to head in for the night, I did like any good fisherman before he comes off the water and declared 5 more casts.  We counted down and my five were over.  Madden however had a plan.  He cast two over here, two over there, and moved to another spot for his last cast.  He cast out as I was putting my rod away and talking about being the "BASS MASTER".  That's when it all went wrong.  Madden's brother Mason is always talking about catching that "Hail Mary" fish when it's almost time to go in but rarely does it ever happen.    Well, tonight it happened.  On Madden's last cast with the lure half way back, he nails a fish.  All I could do was hope that it was something besides a bass but as you could see by the picture below my hopes were dashed.  As Madden proudly strolled back to the house he commented that he knew God had blessed that last cast.  Well Madden, the Lord does work in mysterious ways and it looks like I have to take the trash out all week.

It might not be a big fish but it was a big win for Madden.
