Hitting the Water with Capt. John Keizer Leave a reply
I have been out on the sound, the coast off Oregon and Washington and Mexico twice with Capt. John Keizer of Salt Patrol but I've never actually fished with Capt. John. That all changed this past week when were discussing the area 11 opener. John mentioned that he was going to be fishing on Saturday so I invited myself on the boat after the show. I had heard that the bite was decent around Pt Defiance so I was in a hurry as soon as the show was over. I didn't want to miss anything and after talking to John on the phone on the way down I knew there was fish to be caught.
When I arrived, the Lowrance boat came screaming in to pick me up and then we were off to get some lines wet. John had mentioned that they had a 10lber to the boat that came unbuttoned right before they could get a net on it. Who's idea was it to use barbless hooks around here anyway? We fished three lines most of the time, 2 with herring and mine with a spoon.
I finally got to break in my new Fetha Styxx that sonya got me for my birthday.
The spoon seemed to be the hot ticket at first and after a couple of drive-by's and a shaker I hooked in to something big. Line started peeling off the reel and right about the time I was getting settled in for battle one of the sea lions that we had seen cruising by decided he liked what was on the end of my line. When's the season on those critters anyway?
Is sure is good to see cod starting to make a comeback, this one was returned safely to the water.
We trolled around for awhile longer and caught some other fish but we were not able to get what we were after. All in all it was a great day on the water, the sun was out, and we had enough action to keep us motivated. Now if those little shakers could just grow up a bit! To hear more about Capt. John, Salt Patrol and what we'll be doing this summer make sure you listen to the show this weekend. John Keizer and Ray Gombiski will be co0hosting with me while Robbo and Nelly try to tame SE Alaska.
Some keepers were caught but with all the boats in the water, the catch rate couldn't have been that high.
