To all,
I have been working with NRC and the NW Straits Commission who are responsible for removing the derelict gear and crab pots from the Puget Sound waters. They have more derelict nets to pull and are awaiting funding to do final clean up, which should happen shortly. They have done a fantastic job of getting these constant killers out of the water. It was not an easy task. I had in depth talks with Jeff June who is the lead on finding this gear. The commercials in the beginning did not want to divulge where they lost their nets. They finally broke through the ice and gained the information where to start finding them and now many are removed as a result of it. I have personally been out and helped on the derelict net removal boat and gainged a lot of knowledge from it. This is a fantastic program of helping our waters to heal.

They are getting ready to take on derelict shrimp pot removal. I have been talking with them about this in detail and they are trying to find where the greatest number of shrimp pots are lost. So they compiled this easy quick survey for us to take. We tailored it a little along with WDFW biologists so we could possibly learn some other things too.

Once they gain the knowledge of where to begin searching, they will take their underwater imaging equipment and start working the areas to see where they should remove them first. They need to see how serious the problem is so they can acquire funding for this. Many of our PSA Chapters have given money to the NW Straits Commission for derelict gear removal as it is a goal we believe in and our waters can be cleaned of these constant killers.

Please help us by taking this quick survey that will only take a couple of minutes. Please forward it to all of your fellow shrimpers, chapter members, and mailing lists.
Thank you
