Just upgraded my electronics to a HDS5 Gen 2. Have it installed but haven't had time yet to play with it on the water. I know it isn't the latest and greatest, but definitely a huge upgrade over the 12 year old Garmin sounder and eagle chart plotter that it replaced.
The question I have is should I purchase an additional chip to go in this unit, and if so which one? I mainly fish the sound and strait for salmon, halibut and crabbing. Let me know what you recommend or if it is even needed.

I would get the Navionics chip for Canada & US.

Not to be confused with Platinum shading, Sonar Charts are enhanced depth lines that are a great source of bottom contour information!
