After a slow, rough water opener, the winter chinook or "blackmouth" season kicked into high gear!

The first weekend of November dawned flat calm, sunny and blackmouth were in a biting mood. Add a little friendly competition in the form of the 20th annual Bayside Marine Salmon Derby and you have a recipe for a great time!

On the first day of the derby, Jay Field, Robbo and I had a good outing for some decent fish weighing in a total of 28.3 pounds

Our catch did not approach the largest fish of the derby which was a 15.5 pound dandy taken by Glen Helton aboard Bill "Hot Plug" Hayes boat, good for the $2000 grand prize!
Total weight was taken by Team Overkill comprised of Dave Pitcher and Dave Buckley who weighed in a whopping 31.3 pounds of blackmouth and was awarded $1100 for their efforts!

Look for my blog detailing the event later this morning. cheers

Just retruned from being out of town for a while and looking forward to some solid blackmouth fishing in the next couple days.

Looks like you guys had a great first day of the derby, did the bite turn off on Sunday? Seems like after 28lbs the first day you should have crushed Team Overkill for total weight, one more fish would have made you the winner of most weight. The bite must be on one day and off the next, hopefully it is on for us tomorrow.

Hey O3,
I hope you crush em!
We just had one of those days, releasing a nice wild fish and losing a couple others.
We were gunning for the win and went looking for a big one up in Saratoga Passage.
In retrospect, if I had it to do over again, I would have stayed on Possession Sunday beatdeadhorse

What was the hot setup for you Tom... you never did say, or is it a secret? We have our SnoKing PSA members derby this weekend and we're hoping on scoring a derby fish.

Hey KM,
No real secrets here! Just Silver Horde cookies and cream 3.5 Kingfisher Lites behind QCove Chartruse flashers.
We also got bit on Green spatterback needlefish hootchies.
Everything that bit was on bottom.. thanks to Cannons Bottom Track.. and the best bite was at Possession point on the ebb!
Good luck! spy

Thanks Nelly, needlefish hotchies, huh sounds like a waggle tail coho killer might be in order. And those Cannons sound like the perfect answer to BM fishing. Can you adjust how far from the bottom they stay? BTW I still love the show but I definitely miss Tobek, one of my all time fav Cougs.

I hear you KM,
If he is one of your favorite Cougs you should know that it's "Tobeck" with a "c"

Bottom tracking with the Cannons will be one of my next blogs but to give you the short version of the story... (I'm starting a new topic on this in the General Fishing Discussion spy )
