Area 9 Opening Day: Possession Bar

After spotting the fleet a four hour head start we got gear in the water as fast as we could.
Dropping our cannon balls just south of the Possession Pt. green can we managed to catch a halibut on our first pass!

I can't seem to catch halibut during the season so this one got to swim back down to the deck!

After the current stopped running we moved to the middle bar and ran Silver Horde Kingfisher Lite spoons and hooked four chinook. The first two were wild and quickly released...

We did end up with this dandy 25 pounder which took a Silver Horde cookies and creme spoon behind a QCove Jim's Breakaway flasher. Kevin Gogan hoists the lunker while Phil Michelsen looks on.

All told, it was not the scortching opener we had hoped for but it wasn't all that bad! 8-)

The halibut was about 20 pounds and I wish I would have caught it in May!

ah you suck! you mean I got up at 0300, launched the boat at 0330, ran in the dark, got all kind of rained on, dodged dozens of boats doing their neurotic trolling patterns, caught and released one measly 12# native king and one 3# coho; when i could have slept in, hit the bar late morning and hook 4 kings? nice going Nelly!

by the way, was all that brown algae/plankton stuff still floating all around the bar when you got there? it was all over this morning. someone said it was krill larvae.

Nice Fish... Noob question, what prompts you to hit middle of bar on the slack?

I just seem to mark fish and bait there on low slack. Just repeated a pattern I learned last year and got lucky!

Yeah, I saw that stuff too but it looked like a algae bloom to me. Krill larva are just larger that microscopic... :ugeek:

Great job Nelly. Once again, you get er done regardless of the conditions. How many inhces do you like to run the spoon behind your flasher? How about for an ace hi? Your #1 11 year old fan was thrilled to see the big fish last night. So was his dad.

I saw your red boat out there at what looked to be the tin shed. Did you see the gray whale? That was the coolest thing that I have seen as it totally cleared the water. We got one as well just over 20.
