Westport Tuna
Posted: Mon Jul 11, 2011 1:58 pmWell, we decided to make our first trip of the year yesterday after looking at the warm water off the coast for the past 2 wks. My son Mason, John Keizer and myself launched the boat and left Westport around 6 am. We had not had any reports but after looking at some sst shots we decided sw was the way to head. After a 40 mi. run on a very smooth ocean we put gear out in 58 degree bluegreen water. After 20 minutes we saw some jumpers and trolled by, around, and through without getting a hit. We casted swimbaits and jigs as well but nothing. After becoming frustrated by the tease of seeing tuna and then seeing them disappear we decided to shut down and start chumming. We had tons of bait out and still no tuna as they wouldn't get any closer than 40 or 50 yds. We decided to stick with it and finally Capt John got one on a live bait. We kept working and just about every time we started talking about going back to the troll we would hook a fish but it wasn't red hot. We eventually started trolling again and picked up a few more. We caught them on plugs, jigs, swimbaits, and live bait but nothing was any better than anthing else. The tuna were big with our smallest over the 20 lb mark and our biggest at 28lbs. We got our tuna but had to work, it was a great day on the ocean, lot's of life.
