We left Everett on Nelly's boat Thursday night and just over an hour later we pulled in to Skyline Marina where Jay Fields of Dash One Charters treated us to some of the best hospitality that can be had.
After a great meal it was early to bed for a 3am wakeup call. A little coffee and off the dock at 4.
Nelly and I followed Jay out as he wanted to take a look at a few spots. We didn't bother dropping any lines at the first spot but decided to take a look at Thatcher Pass. After spending a few minutes there, it was off to Eagle Bluff for a quick look but before we could really get going we got our second call from Pt. Lawrence and decided to pick up and go.
Pt Lawrence looked promising at first and we saw a few fish caught but nothing for us except a few dogfish. We switched from herring to a spoon in an effort to avoid the dogfish and spent the next hour at Pt Lawrence. After not seeing much more action, we got a call from Troy at Bayside Marine and he was heading home with a limit from Obstruction Pass.
We made a mad dash for Obstruction! It immediately looked better than anything else we had seen all day, Jay field hooked up as soon as he dropped and Nelly got his making the turn on the first pass. Both were nice fish, breaking the 20lb mark. We saw quite a few fish caught and decided to beat it up for awhile.
After a few hours, we started talking about a couple of other areas we could hit but Jay said stick it out. Good thing he did because as we made the turn on the next pass, Nelly's rod slammed down, a qucik pass off to me and the fight was on!
A few minutes later after the fish tried to beach us and then run us into a dock we had the fish in the net. Not even 10am and we were on the way home. By all measures, this years opener showed some great promise for the salmon season ahead. Thanks Jay for taking great care of us!
The cigar of the day was a La Gloria Cubana Serie R No. 6 in a maduro wrapper.
