FRESHWATER
Lake Samish has still been putting out kokanee but the fishing has tailed off a bit over the past week. Mike and Rick (Skagit Arms employees) hit it this morning and managed to land 5 and lose 9 with the largest fish measuring over fifteen inches. These fish are nice and fat according to most reports. According to Mike, the fish were already on the bite at 5:00AM and they were flatlining them (no downriggers) with small spinners tipped with corn.
Lake Shannon has been putting out fish for a smaller than normal crowd. A customer fishing over the weekend noted that there were a decent amount of boats due to the nicer weather. He managed to land limits of 11-13 inchers stillfishing with Pautzke eggs and chum at the first set of buoys on the east side of the lake.
Skagit Springers will open up on June 1 in the upper river and the Cascade.
The upcoming Skagit River sockeye season should be a great fishery. Mark your calander for the June 16 opener. The best way to target these fish has been plunking a small Spin N Glo, a small pink squid and a shrimp tail.
SALTWATER
Last Thursday, Friday and Saturday were pretty good for some halibut fishermen. Kevin (Holiday Sports employee), Johah (former Holiday Sports employee) and I went out on Thursday despite the forecast for strong winds. We made it all the way out to Hein Bank only to get skunked. While we were out, a customer weighed in a 100+ pounder here at the store that was reportedly caught at Partridge Bank. We also weighed multiple halibut in on Friday and Saturday here at the store, most of them weighing from 50 to 70 pounds.
Ling fishermen have been doing well over the past week. Kevin, Nick and I went out last night after work and managed to land one keeper and lost a couple of others that were probably in the keeper range. We also released quite a few out of the slot limit. We were out in the islands around Lopez. We talked to one of the fishermen we knew in Deception Pass and he said that fishing was slow in there. There has been lots of pressure so far in there so it would be a good idea to do some running around in the islands for better luck.
