EVENTS

CCA meeting featuring Cal Stocking of Cause for Divorce Guide Service meets here at Holiday Sports tonight at 6:00 PM

Vasiliy Beranyuk, the Russian Biologist from Wrangel Island, Russia, will be here at Holiday Sports on Wednesday March 21 at 7:00PM. He has been stationed on Wrangel Island for over 30 years studying a variety of species including the Snow Geese that migrate to our area in the winter. He will be discussing the Snow Goose population, life cycles etc and has a great collection of photographs. This should be a very interesting presentation from a man that has lived in one of the most undisturbed remote areas of the world.

FRESHWATER

Not alot of fresh water fishing going on at the moment. The reports coming out of the Columbia system have been good for early springer fishing with about 650 caught so far. The Skagit and most local rivers are still closed down to all fishing.

The Cowlitz has been starting to pump out a few steelhead. A customer headed down over the weekend and managed to boat 5 fish. He noted that they are running on the small side so far.

Drano Lake is set to open on March 16th but not many fish have gone over the dam yet.

Local lake fishing should turn on when the weather starts to warm up. Over the weekend, Stewart (tackleshop employee) decided not to wait for the warmer weather. He went to Lake Goodwin and trolled around for a couple of hours with spoons. He managed to land two really nice rainbows, one of them looked to be over 20 inches. Other good bets for lake fishing on year-round lakes could be kokanee on Samish or Stevens, or rainbows on Campbell or Clear Lake.

SALTWATER

Marine Area 7 hasn't been getting much pressure over the past week due to the heavy winds. One customer managed to make it out on a calmer day and said he landed a nice 12 pound hatchery fish off Lopez. Another customer said they ran into some nice hatchery fish on Salmon Bank last week.

The Anacortes Salmon Derby is sold out. Participants should make note that the 2012-2013 license will be required for the second day of the derby (April 1) while the 2011-2012 license is required for the first day. Also, the Bellingham Bay closure will take effect on April 1 which closes fishing down in Guemes Channel so fishing in that sub-area of Marine Area 7 will only be allowed on the first day of the derby.
